How to restart your career after 55.

Applying harder rarely fixes this. Changing what you are offering, and how you are offering it, usually does.

Everything below is what I would say to you on a call, and what I have watched work for members who were getting nowhere with applications.

Stop chasing one full-time role and build a portfolio

One employer, one salary, one point of failure is a fragile plan after 55, and it puts your income at the mercy of a single hiring manager. Contracting, fractional roles and short projects spread that risk and get you in the door on your skills rather than your birth year. Three clients who value your experience beat one job that is nervous about your age. Start by naming the two or three problems you solve better than anyone.

You do not need another degree, you need one targeted skill

The instinct after redundancy is to go back and retrain from scratch. Usually you do not have to. A short, specific course that updates one part of what you already know is often enough to reopen doors. Match it to where your experience is already scarce and valued, rather than to whatever certificate is trending. Aim for weeks, not years, and for the skill that makes your existing 30 years current again.

Being fluent with AI is the fastest way to kill “out of date”

I use AI tools every single day to draft, research, plan and get unstuck. It has not replaced my 35 years of judgement, it has made that judgement faster. That combination of deep experience plus current tools is something a 25-year-old cannot fake and an employer cannot ignore. You do not need to code. Pick one tool and use it on real work this week.

Not sure which of these applies to you?

That is exactly what a free 30-minute conversation is for. We will work out which move fits where you are, and what to do first.
