How AI hiring screens out experience.

Applicant tracking systems sort on graduation dates and years of experience in milliseconds, and the definition of older is sliding younger every year.

Most people who are screened out never find out it happened. There is no rejection email that says a machine did it, and no way to appeal a score you were never shown.

An algorithm decides before a person reads your CV

Applicant tracking systems sort on graduation dates and years of experience, and they do it in milliseconds. Here is the part that should worry you. In 2025, 24 per cent of HR professionals classed workers aged 51 to 55 as older, up from 10 per cent in 2023, according to AHRI and the Australian Human Rights Commission. The definition of old is sliding younger, and the software is trained on it.

One in five HR teams say their own process works against older workers

That is not me guessing. It is HR professionals reporting on themselves in the 2025 AHRI and Australian Human Rights Commission survey. When bias is built into automated screening, keyword matching and scored video interviews, it stops looking like a decision and starts looking like a system. Nobody in the room feels responsible, and the same people get filtered out every time.

The software does not read “led a turnaround”, it reads keywords

Describe your work in the language you learned 20 years ago and the match score drops, however good you are. So experienced people now have to translate themselves into the exact terms a machine was told to look for. It is a real skill, and it is unfair that it exists. Until hiring changes, the people who learn it get seen and the people who do not get filtered. Have you looked at your CV the way a keyword parser would, rather than the way a manager would?
